What We Do

KTEC 89.5 FM is a student-operated free form radio station, broadcasting 24/7, 365 days of the year. Reaching all corners of the Klamath Basin, anyone with a passion for radio can become a DJ, hosting their very own show.

KTEC begun in 1950 as a hands-on supplement to the Radio Communications program. At the time, radio was newer and more popular, but instruction in radio communications was very important to Oregon Tech (then OTI) because of its position as a school primarily for U.S. Veterans and enlisted personnel. Radio communication was (and is) an integral part of the U.S. Military, and knowledge of subject was in high demand.

The station went on air for the first time on December 19th 1950, according the 1951 edition of the Owler, Oregon Tech's yearbook. The studio was in the Theatre Building on the old campus, the site of which was just west of the current Klamath Falls campus. The original broadcast frequency was 88.1 MHz, and the original transmitter was just 10 watts (our current broadcast power is 210 watts).

Nowadays, KTEC serves as the Klamath Basin's premier free-form radio station, serving the towns of Klamath Falls, Tulalake, Keno, Dorris, and Dairy over the air, and worldwide via our webstream. Our broadcasting agenda is designed to serve the public interest, and our free-form programming platform provides our DJ's the freedom to share what they love with the world.
